Recently released reports detail common side effects experienced by recipients of the vaccines recently approved by the FDA for the prevention of the swine flu.
The FDA has approved four vaccines for the prevention of swine flu. Recent preliminary reports from clinical trials of these vaccines have described common side effects encountered by participants. The first of the preliminary reports published is from a continuing study in Australia, where researchers are testing an inactivated H1N1 vaccine developed by CSL Ltd. in a group 240 volunteers. Following injection, 90% of recipients achieved a strong immune response within three weeks, a sign that the vaccine is working. Participants reported side effects that they experienced within 7 days. Another study tested an H1N1 vaccine developed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals with and without an oil-in-water adjuvant, known as MF29 in 175 adults. Local Side Effects from Approved H1N1 VaccinesNo deaths or serious adverse events have been reported from any swine flu vaccine. Approximately 44% of participants reported mild side effects within 7 days of receiving the first dose of CSL’s swine flu vaccine. 2.5% of vaccine recipients reported moderate local side effects, and there were no severe adverse events reported after immunization. 86% of the volunteers that received Novartis’s H1N1 vaccine reported adverse reactions after one or both doses – the most common local side effect experienced was injection site pain. The reactions were generally mild or moderate and resolved after 72 hours. Reported local adverse events, or side effects occurring at the location where either vaccine had been administered, include the following:
Common Systemic Side Effects from Swine Flu VaccinesSystemic effects were also reported by CSL and Novartis vaccine recipients. Approximately 36% of volunteers that received the swine flu vaccine manufactured by CSL experienced mild systemic side effects. 8% of vaccine recipients reported moderate systemic side effects, and less than 1% experienced a severe adverse reaction to immunization. Severe side effects reported include, malaise, muscle pain, and nausea. Muscle aches were the most common systemic side effect reported by participants receiving the H1N1 vaccine produced by Novartis, and no severe systemic side effects were reported. The following are common whole-body side effects occurring in response to either H1N1 vaccination.
In addition, researchers evaluated the occurrence of select adverse events including neurologic (e.g. Guillain-Barre syndrome), immune system or other serious reactions. According to the studies, none of the enrolled participants experienced these select events. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has also recently released preliminary safety information for an additional swine flu vaccine manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur Inc. Approximately 96% of healthy adults showed a robust immune response after receiving the vaccine. The only adverse events reported by trial participants were pain and redness at the injection site. MedImmune LLC has received approval for a nasal spray H1N1 vaccine. While no safety data for this vaccine has been released to the public, MedImmune spokeswoman Karen Lancaster has reported that side effects are similar to those experienced with the nasal spray vaccine for the seasonal flu. Common events encountered by nasal spray vaccine recipients include runny nose, nasal congestion, and sore throat. While preliminary reports show that approved swine flu vaccines have a low incidence of serious side effects, people can more accurately assess the relative risk of getting vaccinated for swine flu as more safety information from the studies investigating these four H1N1 vaccines is collected and made available to the public in the upcoming months. Following her swine flu shot, my wife became terribly constipated; it was
similar to what taking 4000 mg of hydrocodone apap per day (for
fibromylagia) did to her, but she hasn't had the hydrocodone apap in almost
four months. Is this side effect for H1N1 unusual?

A type of swine flu breakout in 1979 had many people rushing to get a
vaccination also. Paralysis and neurological problems were side effects.

I think that its best to not even get the vaccine from all the people that
are experiencing pain and nausea after getting the shot. They were better
off praying and leaving that swine flu vaccine alone. It was probably just
something they rushed and made up without bothering to consider the side
effects. They rushed and put something together to try to calm down the
issue of swine flu and only made things worse. For Gods sake people's lives
are at stake here.

As a mother of a 6 year old daughter, the choice was difficult. You need
to weigh the pros and cons and speak to your doctor if you have concerns.
After doing research, my husband and I elected for our daughter to have the
shot. For us, a little discomfort while getting the shot far outweights
the alternative of burrying our child. There are some side effects, but
those side effects are no different than when you get the seasonal flue
vaccine. So far, our daughter has had no side effects and no problems and
she is protected from swine flu. If your child has underlying medical
problems or conditions, I would definitely consult my doctor before making
a decision one way or the other. These vaccinations effect every person
and child differently.

I have been hearing pros and cons about this vaccine . I have a 2 year old

and they injected the adult dose into his body by mistake, Do people even
know what they a doing ????? That was just horrible

Get it. The side affects a re better than dealing with the flu itself.
Also, even if you might not suffer much from the flu, how would you feel if
you passed it on to someone else who's body couldn't hand;e it. I work with
kids everyday and I got the shot for their benefit, not mine. My muscles
ache, but my conscience is clear.

I already had a bit of a cold when I had received the swine flu shot
yesterday. Today I am feeling severely nauseated and also have hot and cold
chills and pain at the injection site. Along with those symptoms, I'm also
feeling "out-of-it". Hopefully this does not last long. And to
add, I am a 23 year old female. I have a two year old daughter who will be
getting the vaccination next week, right now she has a bit of a fever from
a seasonal cold/flu so the health care workers would not allow her to have
the shot until her fever was gone.

I recieved the vaccine yesterday and thus far, I have experienced nothing
but the intramuscular pain of having a needle shoved into my arm (which
would be the same as injecting water into your arm - the vaccine does not
cause this pain - but swelling around the injection site is caused by the
virus). I have an autoimmune disorder and asthma - the risk of getting the
virus is much greater than the risk of getting the vaccine. There is
significant controversy behind the vaccine - however, this controversy was
stirred up by a man who is the executive of an all natural - herbal remedy
company. He has everything to gain by making us recall the GBH side
effects that occurred in the 70s. It is no less safe than gettig the
seasonal flu vaccine - there are potential side effects to every single
drug we take. However, the CDC is reporting that by next year the mortality
rate of the H1N1 virus will be 60% of the people who contract it. There is
no question in my mind that I made the right decision.

did they forget to mention that almost 1 in 150 people will come down with
dystonia, a rare neurological disorder that shares alot of the same common
traits as someone who came into contact with a chemical nerve gas agent

death....this just make me trust the government even less than i did before

More people die from Flu Vaccinations than they do the Flu. Look it up and
then decide. Check out what happened in 1976 with the amount of deaths
attributed to the vaccine as opposed to the vaccinations. 25 times more
people died from the vaccine than the flu itself. What's wrong with
letting your immune system (designed by nature, not by a drug company) to
develop and respond as it was designed to?

I took the vaccine and now I have not gotten sick ever since. i think
people should take it so they can at least have an advantage of not getting
it. We should put our trust in the government. But the thing that worries
me is the side effects. I don't think I want them to take it with all of
the side effects, especially at a young age. So at age of 12 I am going to
go and have them take it.

I recieved the H1N1 vaccine and I havent felt good since the vaccine!
Within two hours of the shot I got hives and a nasty rash. It has been
almost two weeks since I recieved the vaccine and I find my head out of
sorts, headache, fever, chills, nausea, and diarrhea. I am unsure if I
would get this vaccine again. I work in a hospital and it is hard to
function. We have a few people out of work sick after recieving the
vaccine. It really stinks that some people end up with these nasty side
effects and let me tell you, they suck! I just pray everyday that I feel
better. I have other medical problems as well, that bring me down and this
is just the icing on the cake! If I was you I would really rethink the
options!

1976 to 2009 many years further double so much wiser? The development and
research in the medical field do progress too. Mistakes from the past are a
lesson for the present and future. But can we, non-experts in the medical
field, bench-mark the results of the progress. Can we blindly follow every
press release or marketing anouncement.
"Is it safe to use?", that is the question for which we seek an answer. Oct 31, 2009 12:13 AM

Not too bad really just a runny nose, some sneezing and a few chills. I
haven't oinked much at all.

As a nurse, don't let the government tell you what you should do. TALK with
your doctor! Atleast with a medical professional, a doctor who knows more,
should help you to make a better judgement call. It is your final decision,
and I hope you do go to your doctor. I only got mine because I work in a
hospital.

I am astounded by the comments people have posted. They are completely
uninformed and spewing data that is false. Had the H1N1 vaccine 3 days ago
- sore arm, some fever. These are part of the immune system trying to make
it's antibodies. People who think the immune system can take care of itself
are not recalling years of the past where small pox, diphtheria and many
other deadly diseases went rampant. Why, because people had no way to
protect themselves with vaccines. Do you get it? The disease is worse than
the poke!!

I had mine today and I've had a sore arm, malaise, a very mild headache and
now I'm getting chills. I had a sore arm and chills/fever last year from
the normal flu shot though so this doesn't seem like an odd reaction from
me. I'll be fine after a good nights sleep. As for everyone else around
here who's got the shot so far, it seems like everyone gets a sore arm, but
that's usually it.

29th, I have been feeling nauseated and It has been like this since friday.
I slept 1 whole day since it happened. My throat started to hurt a lot,
when I awoke I had a terrible fever, my body was aching and I had a high
fever. It's been one day and I still feel terrible, I could barely move my
body and medicine hasn't been helping me. When I started to eat again, my
body wasn't so tired and I could walk again for a short time about 10-20
minutes and I would get very tired

**Research over and over!! I have been torn about my 5 yr old daughter with
asthma getting this vaccine. I asked for God to give me a sign on whether
or not to get my child the vaccine and the next day our sales rep came into
my work and said his 11 year old nephew had the h1n1 vaccine and a week
later started complaining he had a headache few hours later he went into a
terrible seizure now this poor child has been in the hospital ever since
and had severe seizures one after the other. After testing and x-rays they
can't seem to find out why this is happening??? Things that make you go
hummm? Now you tell me this child has never had any health problems or
seizures
What is in the vaccine that could make you have neurological problems maybe the preservative thermisol(mercury) and I wonder what else. Overall I have had several signs after reading these post and will only get the flu shot if it is preservative free which I can not find for my daughters age group her pediatric doctor has it for 3 years and under and Walgreens only has it for adults so what do you do I will continue to pray for this 11year old boy and hope this Swine flu will leave as fast as it came. Good luck to everyone one. Nov 1, 2009 7:51 AM

First...This is not a live vaccine- it does not get you sick to make you
immune. Secondly, the medication itself is thicker than water and so it
sits under the skin until it is absorbed, thus the lump (swelling) and
irritation. And as with anythign you inject into your body, there are bound
to be some who realize an allergy the did not know about, there are some
who's bodies are going to fight it (out-of-it feeling) There has been
plenty of research on this vaccine, and many changes made since the doses
of 1979. Researching on FDA sights is considerably more accurate than
trusting what other paranoid non-subjective *people* have to say about
something they have not studied or experienced from a medical point of
view.
My 5 yr old had no reaction, my 7 yr old threw up and had a sore arm. I can hardly move my arm. But it is still better than getting sick and potentially dying. We all have asthma. Nov 1, 2009 8:16 AM

Received the h1n1 shot on Thursday Oct. 29th, two days later I am coughing, throat feels scratchy, very lethargic, and chilling at night, symptoms seem worse at night also, I don't know if this is side effect from vaccine or I had been exposed to some virus previously? I got the vaccine today.
I'm a teenage girl with a chronic illness, so it seemed like a good idea. I've got tenderness, pain and muscle cramps all down the arm i got the vaccine in, plus malaise and a fever. However, knowing that all of these things are temporary, I'd take this over swine flu any day. I know people who have swine flu, and I saw a girl get carried out of my school on a stretcher the other day because the flu had hit her so hard and so fast and caused her lungs to like, almost completely shut down because of her asthma. It scared me into getting the shot. My advice: if you have a medical condition, or it's a young kid... get the shot. Otherwise, wait a while until they know more about the long term side effects. Other than that, I have a very runny nose, but I feel great. I have

enlarged spleen and I am awaiting surgery to get my spleen removed. It was
recommended by both my surgeon my hematologist to get the shot in order to

I too am amazed at the semi literate questions and assertions below from
those who doubt or don't understand the nature of vaccines and this vaccine
in particular. I had my swine flu shot 6 days ago and
had fewer side effects than from the regular seasonal flu vaccine. If you have any vaccine and have difficulty breathing or hives...that is a sign of an allergic reaction and you should immediately contact your physician. Allergic reactions to vaccines, if they are going to happen, typically happen within minutes to an hour or so....serious ones i.e. ones that cause anaphylactic shock need to be treated immediately...but this is the nature of vaccines. That's why they ask you to wait around a few minutes after injection to see if you have an allergic response. Dystonia in 1 out of 150? Not true. And sorry to the religious fanatic but praying isn't a good protection from the flu. Nov 2, 2009 7:45 AM

Hi, i'm also 22 and just got the vaccine yesterday. I have a bit of side
effects (feeling dizzy, tired and my arms hurts) but nothing more.
I see that some people wrote that they think the disease doesn't exist and the vaccine is fake..well i see it like this, there are 3 options : a) the disease is as bad as they say, i take the shot and therefore i'm safe from getting too sick b) the disease is not as bad as they say, the vaccine is made of whatever banal things they could find and i get the shot and it doesn't change anything in my life c) the disease is bad or medium , but the vaccine also contains things that is harmful to me. So i take the chance of taking it because that the disease is bad is a certainty (people have died from it), that the vaccine is bad is an unknown fact... so i go with what i am certain of...and so should you. I'm a 32 year old woman I had the vaccine last wed. along with my 14 month
old, my 4 yr old and my husband. The baby came through like a trooper with
just a mild fever for aboout 36 hrs normal for any vaccine. My husband and
I both suffered the soreness in our arms for about 2 days. Our 4 on the
other hand came down with a fever on Fri night that spiked to 103.5 and
that spurred a trip to emerge for reassurance that this was only a side
effect of the vaccine. The fever lasted until Sunday. Every kid is
different in how they react but it's better to have the shot and be aware
of what the effects could be than take a chance on the actual virus where
you don't know what the outcome may be.

Wow really, I can't prove that jumping off the cliff is going to kill me so

That has got to be some of the worst logic I’ve ever seen anyone put into type. How about this, I’ll sit back and let all of you play Russian Roulette with your ability to walk, talk, and oh… say… breathe on the off chance that I will contract H1N1 before enough of you with outstanding cognitive abilities turn yourselves into guinea pigs. And I will not subject my 5 year old daughter to phase one of public trials either. As it stands now she is healthy and has no known underlying health conditions that put her at any higher risk than her age does. But let’s not go around thinking I am ungrateful, without folks like you phase 1 of the public trials would not be complete. Nov 2, 2009 3:03 PM

???????
And the 13 year old boy who just died of it in my city was a star athlete and a junior coach of his hockey team; perfectly healthy and given a clean bill of health from his doctor, just days prior to contracting H1N1 and dropping dead at home. As a person with an immune deficiency due to chronic illness I didn't have a choice, really. I get vaccinated or I run the very real risk of dying. I get ill almost every winter, and although I don't like the idea of taking a vaccine, I didn't want to chance it this time. Not everybody who takes the vaccine is an idiot or trying to be a “guinea pig” or trying to play “Russian Roulette with your ability to walk, talk, and oh… say… breathe”. Some of us are between a rock and a hard place, and just trying to do the best we can. Nov 2, 2009 3:26 PM

This vaccine has been tested, no severe outcomes or deaths are reported.
Most common side effect is soreness in the muscle. Some reports more
systemic effects, like chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, dizziness.. The
fact is, this vaccine really works. Typically, a seasonal flu shot will
protect 60% of the people getting it from getting the flu, the H1N1 has
rates above 90%! This is a potentially deadly and harmful virus. Even
though most people will only experience mild symptoms.. Pregnant women and
newborns are found to be especially at risk to get very ill. I work in a
labour and delivery ward, and have already seen severely ill pregnant women
with no pre-excisiting medical factors. Get the flu shot if you can, not
only for your own sake, but to protect the ones that are more
vulnerable..

My family and I received the shot today. We feel fine, a little tired but
nothing major. We took these blinded I had not done any research but after
doing some I feel like I made the best decision. My concern is they say age
9 and under should recieve the vaccine twice, waiting 21 days in between...
why? With the rate of deaths increasing every day it seems like there are
not a lot of choices. I have yet to talk to one doctor who says not to get
the shot, though they do say take the shot over the nasal spray. And after
doing research I agree. They say the vaccine can cause neurological damage,
the spray goes directly up the nasal passage and towards the brain.. so if
it is true the risks are definately higher if using the spray. I have yet
to meet a doctor or physician who has not had the vaccine and if it was
harmful I doubt doctors would be taking a vaccine they know is going to
cause harm to themselves. I definately have a sense of relief and am glad
we had the vaccine not sure if I'll take the children back for seconds but
ultimately glad. Trust me the government doesn't want to harm us because
then they would have no one to control and govern, pharm companys don't
want to harm us because its no fun being rich if you have no one to flaunt
your money and cars in front of.

My family and I got the H1N1 vaccine earlier today. No serious side effects
for us. Just slight soreness in the area were the needle went in. Better to

I had the H1N1 vaccine and the regular flu vaccine today. One in each arm.
I felt dizzy and light headed right after and then my hands went a little
numb and then extremely numb and then they went into spasm and crippled up.
I had no pain. It felt as though they were vibrating. It was really
weird and then it slowly left and I had full use of my fingers again.
Doctor said I had some kind of reaction and not to worry. I'm a little
worried and now not sure if I should give this to my kids.

I'm trying to make an educated decision....I have heard both arguments. We
know for a fact what h1n1 is capable of....
I want to know of follow up to people who have had reactions to the vaccine. After you had flu like symptoms. What happened to the 11 yr old. What happened to the 4 yr old that spiked a fever? Where did you get your info on dystonia (I mean the resource-for proof). I have a neighbour that has been left with Guillain-Barre' syndrome, proven to be result of the flu vaccine. What about the woman that feels suicidal after a week, and all the people with malaise? Thanks for all the input. Alberta, Canada. Nov 3, 2009 7:36 PM

Got shot yesterday. Arm stiffened almost immediately. Later that evening
I was foggy and slightly confused and had a bout of diarhea. Today I am
extremely tired, my arm is so stiff and sore I can barely lift it (although
anti inflams help), my whole body aches, I have a headache and I'm slightly
feverish. This is the first flu shot I've ever had, and I do feel like
crap, but it's manageable. Work was difficult though, had to leave early.
These side effects are not in my head, btw.

So many people are saying, "I got it, better safe than sorry."
The fact of the matter is, they are at the mercy of a vaccine created in a
rushed panic!! Nobody has any clue what they have put in there bodies, for
any of the vaccinated individuals to be so sure that there safer than
anyone else. I refuse to put myself at the mercy of this vaccine,
regaurdless of the fact that I'm pregnant. Some years ago when there was an
H1N1 outbreak, a vaccine was given, and that vaccine killed many more
people than the virus itself. I wonder if they thought "better safe
than sorry" before they keeled over and croaked!!!!

My sister is 24 years old and diabetic so she is in the high risk group and
got the H1N1 vaccine as well as the seasonal flu vaccine, 6 days after
recieving the vaccines she started getting stomache pains and diarrhea,
which turned into bloody diarrhea and then completely bloody. We are not
100% sure yet, but she has seen two gastrontogists and it seems like she
had developed Crohns Disease, an auto immune disorder. I don't believe that
this is a coincidence.

contract swine flu during pregnancy.

I believe I had side effects from the swine vac but would rather have the
side effects than to have the swine flu in general. I have had asthma
since a child. Asthmatic have a 50% survival rate if not less in surviving
the swine flu. The symptoms I had were body aches, fatigue, low grade
fever and intestinal gas/pain and headaches. A few days of extra strength
tylenol and a few cups of white tea did the trick. If you are vomiting or
having diarrhea, drink chamomile tea and white tea as chamomile helps heal
vomiting and diarrhea and white tea acts as a anti-viral. Take the tylenol
to help with the fever and body aches until the tea kicks in.

unless you are deathly ill from the vaccination (possible egg allergy?)
please stop panicking! A stuffy nose, a bit of a fever, some diarrhea or
vomiting and achiness with lethargic or fatigue is nothing compared to the
actual Swine Flu. My girlfriends daughter had it age 14 and had no
underlying health issues but was running over a 104 fever, couldn't walk,
dizzy, cough from hell, etc. She was out for over a week and it was very
scarey. These minor symptoms you are feeling from the vaccination are
nothing! If you are seriously ill from the vaccination, then possibly you
have an allergy to it's ingredients other than the dead cell swine! This
is an entirely different issue and perhaps you should have no flu
vaccination whatsoever! Please don't discourage others from getting the
swine vac as more vaccinated will help to eliminate this horrible virus.
This virus is also making our pets ill! It also mutates and you can get it
again in another form. Remember, H1N1, swine + bird flu!

Remember 1918 over half of americans died because they didn't have the meds
or vaccinations we have today! what happened in 1977, 500 out of 48 million
americans got Barrs. That is a very low percentage compared to how many
did not! You have two decisions here. You take the vac and help yourself
and the rest of the world or you take the chance of getting it, hope your
immune system can ward off another opportunity that you will get it again
in it's mutating stage. How do we handle a possible pandemic if we all
don't assist one another to get rid of this VIRUS!

The 13yr old boy (star athlete like someone was mentionning) that died,
suffered from an underlying condition! They found out that he had
meningitis. Up until now there is nothing that is going to scare me enough
to get the vaccine! Even less give it to my 3 yr old son! I am more scared
of the fact that they came out with a vaccine in so little time; and now
they want to TEST it on everyone...
Plus, all the information that is out there is confusing and contradicting! How are we to make an informed decision about this vaccine when all the info we get is so chaotic!?? Nov 5, 2009 10:43 AM

answering the question of the 14 year old boy, no you will not die from the
swine flu vaccination. While all of you are researching the 1970's
regarding the swine flu vaccination, please research the 1918 epidemic when
the vaccination was not available. In the 70's, the reason why 500
americans got barr, etc. from the swine vaccination is because the batch
was not good. These things happen when people do not store the vaccination
in the environment it is suppose to be stored in. This causes the
vaccination to go bad just like when you buy meat or fish and forget to put
it in the freezer. A school in the USA forgot to do this btw, so they
through out 5,000 batches of vaccine. Good job! Getting it from your
doctor would be the safest method or a clinic.

Here's something else to think about. When you go for your vaccination, do
not go sick. Wait until your cold or flu leaves your body. This alone will
cause a backfire! Also, remember that a Virus can lie dormant in your body
for 4 weeks. If there is a virus in your body, after you get the flu shot,
it will come out and then may confuse you thinking you are having a
reaction to the vaccine. It takes a few weeks for the swine vaccine as
well as the seasonal to work and become immune. Hope this helps.

I was at the doctors office yesterday for an unrelated issue, and found out
that they had just got a shipment in of the shot (san diego area).. I opted
for it as my 8 year old was sick from a flu about 2 weeks before.. The
DOCTOR AND NURSE assured me that there was NO side affects to this shot,
only they said if you were somehow allergic to eggs or something...(which i
know I am not).. so I bit the bullet and took the shot.. (do not know which
version it was).. this morning I felt like I got hit by a bus, my vision
was severely hampered at times (very blurry), and it my lower back, legs
and abdomen feel like I ran a damn marathon or something they are very very
sore.... I vomited a couple of times, my nose has started running, (no
fever yet) but I have had headaches on and off all day.. I have NEVER had a
flu shot before this and I am 38 years old.. and I can't even remember
having the flu in the past.. I am really wondering if I made the right
decision here..

I'm a twenty year old female. I have asthma, so it was recommended I get
the vaccine. So far, I havent had any side effects at all. There's been
swelling where I was injected and my arm is sore, but nothing at all
drastic. In a few more days, who knows? But for now I'm fine. I have
absolutely no regrets regarding getting the vaccination. There's plenty of
information out there for and against the vaccination...in the end you
really have to try and make the informed decision yourself. For me, it was
getting the vaccination. People are dying from this H1N1 virus.. no one has
died from the vaccine. I would much rather have the mild side effects for a
little while than die from the virus. Good luck and God bless you all in
making your decision.

The swine flu vaccine was not put out much faster than a regular flu
vaccine would have taken to be produced. More time, effort, manpower, and
money did make it come out faster than normal, but it is produced in the
same way as seasonal flu vaccine. The facts with the flu are already out
there and the deaths and hospitalizations are on the news daily. How
someone can see that and not think it's a major problem/pandemic is beyond
me. I see it daily at the school I teach at when half of the class is out
sick with swine flu. This is NOT like the normal flu with the amount of
sickness it has caused. How people can still shun the vaccine is amazing.
Please inform yourself before making a choice, but look at all sides. The
fearmongering going on about the vaccine is overwhelming. However, the
facts about the vaccines and test studies are out there as well for those
who look for it. Many people who got sick after the vaccine could have
also contracted the flu before and it is just now kicking in. It takes a
while after getting the shot for you to become immune. I personally got
the shot, and even if I become sick w/ side effects, it is MUCH better than
my husband having to bury me at 29 because I contracted the flu from a
student.

We both had sore arms for a few days but not serious. That's it. I had some minor warmth and nausea when my immune system kicked in. He felt nothing. Probably because he likely had the virus a week before although they won't test you for it in canada unless you are admitted to a hospital. If not for the sore arms for a few days in the case of me and my son we would not have even known we had it. Nov 7, 2009 9:24 AM

Are you people insane? Or paranoid? Or both? Vaccines save lives every day.
Think about how fortunate you are to even have the choice available to have
it or not. There are people in 3rd world countries who cannot access or
afford the same luxuries that you all are criticizing. I had the vaccine
two days ago, and have had many vaccines in my life...the side effects were
exactly the same as the HPV immunizations and tetanus shots. Why are we not
raising eyebrows at the benefits of having those vaccines as well? Get
serious, people. Any side effect must be better than dying from the H1N1
virus.

People keep saying wake up, YES WAKE UP, you have to realize that there are
people if they don't get this vaccine they are at serious health risks, im
a 15 year old male with asthma, got my shot today and I think it was the
right decision, so there are side-effects, everything has side-effects,
drinking to much coffee has side effects. Fair enough for people who are
perfectly health but don't be spreading shit on the net that the vaccine is
messed up because you are helping contribute to people dying, at the end of
the day the pro's outweigh the cons.
People are also mentioning that the flu shot kills more than the virus does, it also saves many lives so use your brain, I feel ashamed that people have became so frightened at one little shot. The vaccine has been tested and there are no serious side-effect, guaillain barre you say? odds are 1 in a million of getting it, it your that unlucky, come on. If you are in the high-risk groups like myself, do the wise thing, get the vaccine and live. Nov 7, 2009 1:51 PM

Good grief. Way too much rhetoric from both sides! Come on everybody, KNOCK
IT OFF ALREADY!!!
First, lets check some raw statistics I've been able extract from various data sets. These are due to direct effects, not some weird collection of secondary effects. Normal regular flu deaths ~ 1 in a million. Flu shot serious side effects ~ 1 in a million. Current pandemic H1N1 deaths ~ 150 in a million. Average death rate by accident ~ 400 in a million. Asian Flu deaths in 1957 ~ 1000 in a million. Spanish Flu deaths in 1918 ~ 25000 in a million. Should we get too excited about this current flu? NO! ....Oh sure, some healthy people will die, but not many. Should we get excited if we have asthma or similar? Yes. ~ 70% of deaths are related to complications there-of. Should we get excited for other health issues or age group? Yes. ~ 70% of deaths. (note overlap of percentages) Secondly: Is the current vaccine great? Maybe not. It has some additives to help stretch the vaccine batch as far as possible, and still make it ~ 95% effective. And since it can take months to get a good batch and sorta test it, this would be the most reasonable way to make enough of it for almost everybody. (with possible side effects) Alternatively, a basic vaccine (without additives) would be available for only a select few. My take on this: I get the feeling that the hype related to this pandemic is more to do with the wish to put a special emergency pandemic preparedness system in place just in case a real Flu pandemic like the one in 1918 re-occurs. Of course, if such a flu broke out today, we all would be in serious trouble , as it could spread within weeks all around the world, and we'd all be dropping like flies! But for right now, the guys most benefiting from this are the drug companies manufacturing the vaccines. And if you are in one of the high risk groups, by all means, take the shot. It's safer than crossing the road. Nov 8, 2009 9:06 PM

To the "Humanity existed for billion of years" commenter: mass
transit has only existed for DECADES. Diseases spread faster now because
people move farther, faster now. Walk down the street and you'll likely
pass at least ONE tourist who has recently travelled through many
communities, any of which could have a rampant disease (it's not like
there'd be a sign posted).
My 30-week pregnant wife and I just made the agonizing decision for her to get the shot, because we'd rather she get semi-predictable side effects at OUR convenience than be surprised by the flu. Do I 100% trust the vaccine, or its makers? No. But I trust the virus even less. If you're high-risk, get the vaccine. If you're young and healthy and don't mind putting high-risk people at risk, don't get it. Just stop trying to scare people with emotive language: there's already too much emotion, and not enough FACTS, out there. Oh and those of you who DO get the vaccine, be prepared to feel ill, sore etc. for a while: that's just how the human body works. At least you'll know WHEN it's going to happen, and can plan for it. - CJ Nov 8, 2009 9:44 PM

BTW, about the "Why is my kid so sick" comment: there are dozens
of researchers all around the world who are happily linking the increase of
allergies, asthma, autism, ADD, etc. to the inordinate amount of
preservatives, artificial colors, and artificial flavors in today's
foods.
It's easy to blame something as acute as a pandemic and its inevitable vaccine, while you eat a hot dog and scull a soft drink. -CJ Nov 9, 2009 3:35 AM

WHO has reported millions of people around the world have received with no
severe side effects or deaths. Stop with the made up fear mongering posts.
No one has died, no one ended up in hospital with epilepsy and no, more
people do not die from vaccines than flu. This vaccine has been proven safe
and anyone that chooses not to get it should stay away from the hospitals
when they get sick. You had a chance, made your chose so pay the
consequences on your own instead of burdening the health care system. My
wife (pregnant) had hers along with the 2 youngest (2 and 4). Waiting my
turn with the 2 oldest are we are not on the priority list.

My daughter received the shot on Tuesday and had fever of 103 on Dunday
plus other flu smptoms. I called the dr. It is a live virus they give in
the nasal mist. I would rather her feel bad a couple fo days though, that
die from the flu. I was very hesitant, but my pediatrition took a long
time talking bout the different types of vaccines for regular flu and swine
flu. It is made just like the regular flu vaccination. They already ahd
the tecjnology from that vaccination to be able to create another vaccine,
just with a different virus. It should be as safe as the regular
vaccination. Everyone is different, and some do have serious reactions.
YOu need to research and make an educated decision, not just jump on the
fear bandwagon.

I had my injection on saturday and all i have as a side effect is,its a
little red,a little tender and feels hot in that area.If this is the only
side effect that could save your life and others lives then take it.There
are side effects with all medicines you just dont read into it as much as
people are with this. They have perfected this vaccine since the one that
caused people in america alot of problems. So dont pannick,my advice is
better sick then dead. All these people moaning about being a little sick
should think themselves lucky there is something out there to protect them
against it.Whats worse?

I don't even want to talk about the H1N1 virus or the vaccine. My problem
is with all you illiterate friggin' morons who are incapable of posting a
comment that is even the least bit intelligible. For crying out loud, take
the time to check your spelling and grammar before you post. Otherwise,
you just look like an uneducated idiot with zero credibility. For those
precious few of you who posted an articulate, thoughtful, and
well-researched comment, I thank you. To the rest of you, I'm sorry I
wasted my time on this website researching the topic only to be assaulted
by your crap.
