The Best Sources for Reliable News and Updates on the H1N1 Virus

From the current number of swine flu cases to swine flu maps to flu shot locators, here are some of the best places to get accurate news and updates on the virus.

The 2009 swine flu or H1N1 virus, first gained widespread attention in the early spring. While currently only just over 1% of all reported cases worldwide have resulted in death, experts are still not sure how much more deadly the virus may become. As such, a variety of websites and online resources have be set up to help the public learn the latest on the H1N1 virus. Here are some to check out.

Swine Flu CDC at Flu.gov

This is a website set up by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There is helpful information here regarding the H1N1 virus including video clips of PSAs by Sesame Street characters to help educate kids on the virus. There is a self-evaluation section which walks a person through the steps to determine if they actually have the flu. There is also a myth and facts section, and a flu shot locator to find out where to find a place closest to home to get the vaccine. Under the section, Flu Essentials, there are outlines on how to handle the H1N1 virus specifically for people who have asthma or diabetes.

Swine Flu MSNBC Updates

On MSNBC.com's website, under their Health section, they have a page dedicated to H1N1 news. There is a swine flu tracker showing a map of the United States indicating by colors those states where the H1N1 virus is non-active, active and wide spread, as of a particular date. There is a tips and questions section, as well as all the latest news headlines regarding the swine flu. There is also a section on Bird Flu, which a lot of experts feel is more of a threat than swine flu.

This website is from the government department of Health Canada. Information on the swine flu is divided into groups targeting families and caregivers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, business, and health professionals. In the section entitled H1N1 Surveillance, the number of cases and deaths by province in Canada is detailed and updated on a weekly basis. The site also allows people to sign up to get updated on the status of the virus by Twitter or Facebook.

WHO Swine Flu Updates

The World Health Organization is the authority for health within the United Nations system. They are responsible for providing leadership on global health matters. On their website, they have a page dedicated to the H1N1 news. Here they have a section called Situation Updates which provides weekly updates on the actual number of confirmed swine flu cases worldwide and how many have resulted in death. They also have a list of frequently asked questions regarding the vaccine and the use of anti viral drugs.

All of these websites giving swine flu updates are from legitimate government or news organizations, however, you should always also consult your doctor regarding the latest advancements of H1N1 virus.
